Heel (pronounced like 'hail' in English, or 'Hael' in the local Limburg language) is a small village in the southeastern Netherlands. It's located close to the major E25 highway and the famous Meuse river.
A Look Back in Time
Long, long ago, even before the Romans came to this area, there was a town here called Catualium. It was a Gallic town, built by people who lived in this part of Europe.
Over the years, Heel has been part of different local governments. In 1821, two smaller areas, Panheel and Pol, joined with Heel. They formed a new local government called Heel en Panheel.
Later, in 1991, its name was shortened to just Heel. Then, on January 1, 2007, Heel became part of a larger local government area called Maasgouw.
