The Story of Heidelberg: How It Began
Heidelberg was officially planned and mapped out on December 4, 1878. It was named by its first German settlers, Frank Heil and Frederick Ihrig. They named it after a city in Germany also called Heidelberg.
A post office served the community from 1872 until 1903. Heidelberg officially became an incorporated city on June 26, 1894. This means it became a recognized town with its own local government.
