Sir Helenus Patrick Joseph Milmo (born Helenus Padraic Seosamh Milmo; 24 August 1908 – 30 August 1988) was an important Irish lawyer and a judge in Britain. He was also a DL, which is a special helper to the King's or Queen's representative in a county.

Early Life and Education

Helenus Milmo was born in County Limerick, Ireland, on 24 August 1908. He was the third son of Daniel and Kathleen Milmo. He spent his early childhood in Furbogh, which is in the Galway Gaeltacht area of Ireland.

School and University Years

Milmo went to St. Gerard's School and then to Downside School. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, a famous university. He later became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer who speaks in court. In 1961, he was made a QC, which is a very senior and respected position for a barrister.

Career as a Lawyer and Judge

Sir Helenus Milmo had an interesting career that included working for the government and becoming a judge.

Working for MI5

During World War II, Milmo worked for MI5. This is the United Kingdom's security service, which protects the country from threats. He had previously worked with a person named Kim Philby. In 1951, Milmo was chosen to investigate Philby because there were suspicions that Philby was a spy.

Milmo's investigation suggested that Philby might have been a Soviet agent. However, Milmo could not find enough clear proof at the time. Some people thought Milmo was too much of a gentleman for such a difficult task.

Becoming a High Court Judge

In 1964, Helenus Milmo was appointed to the High Court. This meant he became a senior judge who heard important legal cases.

Family Life

Sir Helenus Milmo was married twice and had a family.

First Marriage and Children

In 1933, Milmo married Joan Frances Morley. She was born on 9 March 1907 and passed away in June 1978. They had five children together:

  • Verity (born 1941)
  • Shaun (born 1943), who became a journalist
  • Patricia (born 1949/1950), who became a solicitor (another type of lawyer). She married Bennett Umunna in 1976.

Grandchildren and Later Life

One of Sir Helenus Milmo's grandsons is Chuka Umunna, who became a British Member of Parliament. This means he was elected to represent people in the UK government. Other grandchildren include journalists Cahal and Daniel Milmo.

After Joan Milmo passed away in 1978, Sir Helenus Milmo married Mrs Anne Brand in 1980. Anne was born Anne Gilmore O'Connell on 27 May 1907. She passed away in 2003 at the age of 96.

Sir Helenus Milmo passed away in 1988 in Chichester, West Sussex. He died just six days after his 80th birthday.
