About the Showy Goldeneye
The showy goldeneye is a perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for more than two years. It also has soft stems, not woody ones like a tree.
What it Looks Like
The plant can grow up to about 15 cm (6 in) tall. It has a large taproot, which is a main root that grows straight down. This helps the plant find water deep in the soil.
Its leaves can be as long as 16 cm (6.3 in). They often have small hairs along their edges.
Its Flowers
One showy goldeneye plant can produce many bright yellow flowers. It might have 25 or even more flower heads. Each flower head looks like a small sunflower.
Each head has two main parts:
- Ray flowers: These are the petal-like flowers around the outside. There are usually 12 to 14 of these.
- Disc flowers: These are tiny flowers packed together in the center. There can be 50 or more of these in one head.
Different Kinds of Showy Goldeneye
There are a few different types, or varieties, of Heliomeris multiflora. They are found in different areas:
- Heliomeris multiflora var. brevifolia - This variety grows in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
- Heliomeris multiflora var. multiflora - You can find this one from Idaho and Montana south to Durango, Mexico.
- Heliomeris multiflora var. nevadensis - This type lives from California east to Utah and south into Jalisco, Mexico.
