Surfing Fun at Henderson Bay

Henderson Bay is a super popular place for surfing. It often has great waves for riders. Both the beach and the reef areas offer waves that break to the left and to the right. This means surfers can enjoy different kinds of rides. However, it's important to be careful because there are rocks hidden under the water.

A Giant Wave in the Past

Scientists have found signs that New Zealand's biggest tsunami happened right here at Henderson Bay. This huge wave took place a long time ago, between the years 1450 and 1480 AD. The tsunami was so powerful that it left behind special deposits more than 30 meters above sea level. These deposits show that the giant wave reached about one kilometer inland from the coast.
