Early Life and Education
Henk Chin A Sen was born in a town called Albina in Suriname on January 18, 1934. He chose to study medicine and attended the Geneeskundige School in Paramaribo. He successfully graduated in 1959, becoming a doctor.
Medical Career Beginnings
After finishing his studies, Chin A Sen worked as a general doctor from 1959 to 1961. He then traveled to the Netherlands to specialize in internal medicine. When he returned to Suriname, he worked at the Sint Vincentius Hospital in Paramaribo.
Joining Politics
Even though he was a doctor, Chin A Sen joined the Nationalist Republican Party (PNR). This party wanted Suriname to become fully independent. He was not very active in politics at first.
Political Leadership in Suriname
In 1980, a group of soldiers led by Dési Bouterse took control of Suriname. This event is known as the Sergeants Coup. Surprisingly, Chin A Sen, who was not a very active politician, was chosen to be the Prime Minister of Suriname on March 15, 1980.
Becoming Prime Minister
As Prime Minister, Chin A Sen formed a government that included some members of the military council. He also appointed women to important roles, which was notable for the time. Siegmien Power-Staphorst and Nel Stadwijk-Kappel were appointed as junior ministers, and Power-Staphorst soon became a full minister.
From Prime Minister to President
Later that year, on August 15, 1980, the President at the time, Johan Ferrier, resigned. Henk Chin A Sen then took on the role of President as well, holding both top positions.
Disagreements and Exile
On February 4, 1982, President Chin A Sen was removed from his position by Dési Bouterse. This happened because they had disagreements about how the country should be run. After this, Chin A Sen left Suriname.
Life in Exile
He first went to Pittsburgh in the United States. Then, on December 27, 1982, he moved to the Netherlands. While in the Netherlands, he became the leader of the Council for the Liberation of Suriname. This group worked against Bouterse's rule, but they faced many challenges. Chin A Sen also had connections with Ronnie Brunswijk and his Jungle Commando, a group that fought against Bouterse's government.
Facing Danger
On March 7, 1985, a dangerous event occurred in Rijswijk, Netherlands. Armed men attacked an office building where five musicians were practicing. Three musicians were sadly killed. Chin A Sen's office was on the same floor, and it is believed the attack was meant for him. Luckily, he was not there at the time. An investigation was reopened years later, but no one was charged.
Return to Suriname and Later Life
In 1995, Henk Chin A Sen returned to Paramaribo, Suriname. He went back to working as a medical doctor, specializing in internal medicine. He passed away in Paramaribo at the age of 65.
