Henri Seppälä was born in Espoo, Finland, in 1980. He started playing the guitar when he was eleven years old. He became interested in heavy metal music because of his brother. His brother listened to bands like Slayer and Pantera with his friends. Before that, Henkka had only heard glam metal and hard rock bands like Guns N' Roses and Poison.

Over time, he became interested in even heavier music. In the early 1990s, he discovered different types of metal music.

When he was 13, he played drums in his first band, called Aivokasvain (which means Brain Tumour). He was in this band for two years. After that, he left and started playing the bass guitar as his main instrument.

Joining Children of Bodom

In 1996, the original bass player of Inearthed left the band. Inearthed was the first name for Children of Bodom. Alexi Laiho, the lead guitarist and singer, asked Seppälä to join. When he joined, he started using a 5-string bass guitar.

Henkka often spoke for the band in interviews and public events. He is known for being a calm and balanced person. He can speak many languages, including Russian, Finnish, English, Swedish, and some Spanish and French.

When he was not touring, he studied political history at the University of Helsinki. In 2012, he earned his Master's Degree. His thesis was about how non-governmental organizations (NGOs) help with rural development in Finland. He also enjoys sports, especially European football, and likes swimming.

Henkka was very dedicated to Children of Bodom. He was the only member who did not have other music projects while they were together. He has said that his family and his band were the most important things in his life.

Musical Influences

On the official Children of Bodom website, Henkka Seppälä listed some bass players who influenced him. These include Tom Araya, Billy Gould, Steve Brunner, Paulo Jr, Joe Principe, and David Ellefson.

Instruments and Gear

Henkka uses special bass guitars made by ESP Guitars. He has several signature models, which are basses designed just for him. These include:

  • The ESP Henkka T. Blacksmith Forest Signature Bass, which has 4 strings.
  • The ESP Henkka T. Blacksmith Bottom Line Signature Bass, which has 5 strings.
  • Other custom-made ESP basses, like an "Assault" shaped one and a Viper Bass.

For his sound, he uses an Ampeg SVT3pro amplifier and an Ampeg 810 speaker cabinet. He also uses special pedals to make his sound stronger, like a Super Overdrive pedal or a Tech21 Sansamp pre-amp. He uses a special audio switcher to change between his wireless units.
