Joe Principe's Music Career
Forming 88 Fingers Louie (1993–1999)
In 1993, Joe Principe helped start a punk band called 88 Fingers Louie in Chicago. He formed the band with Dom Vallone, Mr. Precision, and Denis Buckley. They spent six years touring and releasing music. Some of their releases included Go Away, Wanted, Totin' 40's & ... Up, Behind Bars, 88 Fingers Up Your ..., The Dom Years, The Teacher Gets It, Back On The Streets, and 88 Fingers Louie/Kid Dynamite. In 1999, the band members decided to break up and go their separate ways.
Starting Rise Against (1999–present)
Soon after 88 Fingers Louie broke up, Joe Principe met Tim McIlrath at a concert. Joe asked Tim to sing on some songs he had recorded with Mr. Precision, the guitarist from his old band. Tim agreed, and they decided to form a new band. They later met drummer Toni Tintari and called their band "Transistor Revolt." This was the band's first name before they changed it to "Rise Against."
In 2000, they released a demo called Transistor Revolt. Toni Tintari left the band later that year. Brandon Barnes joined as the new drummer. In 2001, the band signed with an independent record label called Fat Wreck Chords. They released their first album, The Unraveling, and spent the rest of the year touring.
In 2002, Mr. Precision left the band, and Todd Mohney became the new guitarist. The band went back to the studio in December 2002 to record their second album, Revolutions per Minute, which came out in 2003. They toured for the 2003 Warped Tour, which helped them become more popular.
Rise Against then signed with Dreamworks Records in late 2003. However, Dreamworks was soon bought by Universal Music Group, and Rise Against ended up with Geffen Records. Todd Mohney left, and Chris Chasse joined as the new guitarist. They started recording their third album, Siren Song of the Counter Culture. This album was released on August 10, 2004. It became very successful, with popular songs like "Give It All", "Swing Life Away", and "Life Less Frightening".
In January 2006, after touring for Siren Song of the Counter Culture, the band recorded their fourth album, The Sufferer & the Witness. It was released on July 4, 2006, and was a big success. Songs like "Ready to Fall", "Prayer of the Refugee", and "The Good Left Undone" became very popular. Rise Against toured a lot in 2006 and 2007 to support this album. They were a main band at the 2006 Warped Tour. In 2007, Chris Chasse left the band, and his friend Zach Blair joined as the new guitarist.
Rise Against's fifth album, Appeal to Reason, came out in October 2008. It was their highest-charting album at that time. The album received good reviews, and its singles included "Re-Education (Through Labor)", "Audience of One", and "Savior".
After touring for nearly two years, Rise Against began recording their sixth album, Endgame, which was released on March 11, 2011. This album reached number 2 on The Billboard 200 chart. Throughout their career, Rise Against has earned many gold and platinum records in the United States and Canada. Their most recent albums include The Black Market (2014), Wolves (2017), Nowhere Generation (2021), and Nowhere Generation II (2022).
