Music Career
Forming 88 Fingers Louie
In 1993, Joe Principe helped start a punk band called 88 Fingers Louie in Chicago. He formed the band with Dom Vallone, Mr. Precision, and Denis Buckley. The band played together for several years. By 1999, the band members had some disagreements. They decided to break up and go their separate ways.
Starting Rise Against
Soon after 88 Fingers Louie broke up, Joe met Tim McIlrath at a concert. Joe asked Tim to sing on some songs he had recorded with Mr. Precision. Tim agreed, and they decided to form a new band. They later met drummer Toni Tintari. Their first band name was "Transistor Revolt." They later changed it to "Rise Against."
In 2000, they released a demo called Transistor Revolt. Toni Tintari left the band that same year. Brandon Barnes joined as the new drummer. In 2001, the band signed with an independent record label called Fat Wreck Chords. They released their first album, The Unraveling, and toured a lot.
In 2002, Mr. Precision left the band. Todd Mohney became the new guitarist. The band recorded their second album, Revolutions per Minute, in 2003. They also played on the 2003 Warped Tour, which helped them become more popular.
Rise Against's Growing Success
Later in 2003, Rise Against signed with Dreamworks Records. They planned to record their third album. However, Dreamworks Records was soon bought by Universal Music Group. This meant Rise Against moved to Geffen Records. Todd Mohney left the band, and Chris Chasse joined as the new guitarist. They then started recording their album Siren Song of the Counter Culture.
Siren Song of the Counter Culture came out on August 10, 2004. It was a big success for the band. Songs like "Give It All" and "Swing Life Away" became very popular.
In 2006, the band recorded their fourth album, The Sufferer & the Witness. It was released on July 4, 2006. This album was also very successful. It included popular songs such as "Ready to Fall" and "Prayer of the Refugee". Rise Against toured a lot to support this album. They were even a main band on the 2006 Warped Tour. In 2007, Chris Chasse left the band. Zach Blair became the new guitarist.
Rise Against released their fifth album, Appeal to Reason, in October 2008. This album sold many copies in its first week. It became the band's highest-charting album at that time. Popular songs from this album include "Re-Education (Through Labor)" and "Savior". The band went on a big tour in North America in 2009.
After touring for nearly two years, Rise Against began recording their sixth album. Endgame was released on March 11, 2011. It also received great reviews and was a commercial success. Throughout their career, Rise Against has earned many gold and platinum records. This means their albums have sold a lot of copies in the United States and Canada.
