History of River Grove
River Grove gets its name from two things: the nearby Des Plaines River and the large groups of ash trees that used to grow along the riverbanks. Early settlers from Germany and Nordic countries felt at home here because the ash trees reminded them of their homelands.
For a long time, River Grove was home to many old ash trees. One green ash tree in Lafrombose Woods was thought to be 240 years old! However, between 2006 and 2018, an insect called the emerald ash borer caused many ash trees to die. Scientists believe this insect might stop new ash trees from growing in the area.
James Kirie (1911–2000), a businessman and politician who served in the Illinois state government, was born in River Grove.
