Fields Hydraulics

Henri Pitot (born May 3, 1695 – died December 27, 1771) was a clever French engineer. He specialized in hydraulics, which is the science of how water and other liquids move. He is most famous for inventing the Pitot tube.

The Pitot Tube Explained

Henri Pitot invented the Pitot tube in 1732. He created it to measure how fast water flows in a river. Specifically, he used it to study the Seine River in France.

The Pitot tube works by measuring the pressure of the moving fluid. This pressure helps scientists figure out the fluid's speed. The height of the water in the tube shows how fast the water is moving. The faster the water, the higher the water column in the tube.

Building Big Projects

Henri Pitot became very well-known for his engineering work. One of his most famous projects was designing the Aqueduc de Saint-Clément. This was a large aqueduct near Montpellier, France. It took 13 years to build!

He also worked on extending the Pont du Gard. This is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge in Nîmes. His work helped improve this historic structure.

Joining Important Groups

Because of his great work, Henri Pitot was invited to join important scientific groups. In 1724, he became a member of the French Academy of Sciences. This was a big honor for scientists in France.

Later, in 1740, he also became a fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected scientific group in London, England.

The Pitot Theorem

There is also a special rule in plane geometry named after him. It is called the Pitot theorem. This theorem describes a property of certain shapes with circles inside them.

Remembering Henri Pitot

To honor his achievements, a street in Carcassonne, France, is named after him. It is called Rue Henri Pitot.
