Henrique Pereira Rosa (born January 18, 1946 – died May 15, 2013) was a politician from Guinea-Bissau. He served as the temporary, or interim, President of Guinea-Bissau from 2003 to 2005. He was born in 1946 in a place called Bafatá.
Serving as Interim President
Henrique Rosa became the interim President of Guinea-Bissau on September 28, 2003. He stayed in this role until October 1, 2005. He was chosen after the military took over the government on September 14. This event is called a coup.
After the coup, leaders from politics and different groups in society talked together. They decided that Rosa should lead the country for a short time. His main job was to help the country get back to normal. He needed to organize new elections.
His government successfully held a fair election for lawmakers in March 2004. Then, a presidential election took place in June and July 2005. These elections were also seen as fair and open. João Bernardo Vieira, who had been president before, won the 2005 election. Rosa did not run for president himself.
During his two years as interim president, Rosa's government brought more stability to Guinea-Bissau. They also made good improvements in how the country treated its people. This included better human rights.
After His Presidency
Henrique Rosa handed over power to the new president, João Bernardo Vieira, on October 1, 2005.
Rosa later decided to run for president again. He was an independent candidate in the June 2009 presidential election. He finished in third place in that election.
His Passing
Henrique Rosa passed away on May 15, 2013. He was in a hospital in Porto, a city in northern Portugal. He had been battling lung cancer for nine months. He was 67 years old when he died.
