Charles Henry Bibby (born November 24, 1949) is a former professional basketball player and coach from the United States. He played as a point guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for teams like the New York Knicks, New Orleans Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers, and San Diego Clippers. He also spent time as a player-assistant coach for the Lancaster Lightning in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA).

Henry Bibby comes from a family of athletes. His brother, Jim Bibby, was a professional baseball pitcher in Major League Baseball. His son, Mike Bibby, also became a successful point guard in the NBA.

Playing Basketball

College Success at UCLA

Henry Bibby started his college basketball journey in 1969. He played for the UCLA Bruins. As a freshman, he was the top scorer on his team.

Bibby was a starting point guard for the UCLA Bruins. He helped them win three straight national championships. These wins happened in 1970, 1971, and 1972. The Bruins were coached by the famous John Wooden. Bibby was part of an amazing 88-game winning streak for the team. In his senior year, he was named an All-American. This means he was recognized as one of the best college players in the country. He is one of only four players to have started on three NCAA championship teams for UCLA.

Playing in the NBA

After college, Henry Bibby was chosen in the 1972 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He decided to play for the Knicks. He spent two and a half seasons with the team. During this time, he helped the Knicks win an NBA title in 1973.

Bibby played for nine seasons in the NBA. He was also part of the Philadelphia 76ers teams that reached the NBA Finals in 1977 and 1980. Although they made it to the finals, they did not win the championship those years.

Later in his playing career, Bibby won a CBA championship with the Lancaster Lightning in 1982.

Coaching Basketball

Coaching in Different Leagues

Henry Bibby began his coaching career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He found success early on, winning two championships as a coach in 1982 and 1989. He also coached the Winnipeg Thunder.

In 1996, Bibby became the head coach for the men's basketball team at the University of Southern California (USC). He coached the USC Trojans for nine seasons. During his time there, his teams had a good record. He led USC to the NCAA tournament in 1997, 2001, and 2002. In 2001, his team made it to the "Elite Eight" round of the tournament. He left the position during his ninth season.

In 2005, Bibby took on a new role. He was named the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). After 28 games, he was replaced by his assistant coach, Joe Bryant.

Assistant Coaching Roles

Henry Bibby also worked as an assistant coach for several NBA teams. In 2006, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers coaching staff. He stayed with them until 2008. In 2009, he became an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies, where he worked until 2013. After that, he joined the Detroit Pistons' coaching staff.

Personal Life

Henry Bibby has a famous family connection in sports. His brother, Jim Bibby, was a professional baseball pitcher. His son, Mike Bibby, also played as a point guard in the NBA.

Henry Bibby and his son, Mike, are one of the few father-son pairs to both win an NCAA basketball championship. They reconnected in 2002, during the peak of Mike's NBA career.
