Lieutenant General Henry Doctor Jr. (born August 23, 1932 – died December 7, 2007) was an important leader in the United States Army. He reached the high rank of Lieutenant General. He served as the top commander of the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea. Later, he became The Inspector General for the entire U.S. Army.
Early Life and Education
Henry Doctor Jr. was born in Oakley, South Carolina, on August 23, 1932. His parents were Henry Doctor and Annie Aikens Doctor. He went to Berkeley Training High School in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
After high school, he attended South Carolina State College. In 1954, he earned a degree in Agriculture. He was also a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Later, he continued his studies at Georgia State University. There, he earned a Master of Arts degree. He also graduated from two important military schools:
- U.S. Army Command and General Staff College
- U.S. Army War College
These schools helped him prepare for leadership roles in the Army.
A Career in Service
Henry Doctor Jr. served in the U.S. Army for many years, from 1954 to 1989. He was a dedicated soldier and leader. During the Vietnam War, he showed great courage. In 1967, as a Major, he temporarily led a battalion. This happened when his commander's helicopter was shot down.
His career included many important positions. He eventually became the Commanding General of the 2nd Infantry Division. This division was stationed in South Korea. His final role before retiring was The Inspector General of the U.S. Army. In this role, he made sure the Army followed rules and standards.
Honors and Legacy
Henry Doctor Jr. received many awards for his service. His alma mater, South Carolina State, gave him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. The Citadel also honored him with an honorary Doctor of Military Science degree.
He passed away on December 7, 2007. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, a special place for American heroes.
In 2008, a part of Old U.S. Route 52 in South Carolina was named after him. This five-mile stretch of road is now called the "Lieutenant General Henry Doctor Jr. Memorial Highway." It passes near his birthplace in Oakley. This honors his lasting impact and service to his country.
