Henry Ellis Turner was born on April 1, 1832, in Winchester, New Hampshire. As a young boy, he went to local schools in his area. He also worked in a woolen factory, which made cloth from wool.

Becoming a Lawyer

In 1854, Henry began to study law. He learned from a lawyer named Hiram Gardner in Lockport (city), New York. He also attended Albany Law School for a few months to further his legal education. By December 1855, he passed his exams and became a lawyer. He started his own law practice in Lowville (village), New York in 1856.

Serving His Community

Henry Ellis Turner quickly became an important person in his community. He served as the District Attorney for Lewis County, New York from 1857 to 1859. A District Attorney is a lawyer who represents the government in court cases. After that, he became a judge for the Lewis County Court, serving from 1860 to 1863.

A Leader in the Civil War

In 1861, during the American Civil War, Henry Ellis Turner played a big part in helping his state. He helped to gather and organize a group of soldiers for the 1st New York Light Artillery Regiment. He became a lieutenant colonel in this regiment. He and his soldiers fought with the Army of the Potomac, a major Union army, until 1862.

A Career in Politics

After his military service, Henry Ellis Turner continued to serve the public. He was again the District Attorney of Lewis County from 1871 to 1873.
