Henry Eyring's Life Story

Early Years and Family

Henry Eyring was born on March 9, 1835, in Coburg, a place that is now part of Germany. His parents were Edward Christian Eyring and Ferdinandina Charlotta Caroline von Blomberg. His mother's father was a nobleman who worked for the King of Prussia. Henry's father was a pharmacist, but his family business faced financial problems. When Henry's father died around 1850, Henry became an orphan and had little money.

Education and Moving to America

Henry Eyring received a good education in Coburg. After his father passed away, he started learning the business of selling medicines in Vienna. In 1853, Henry moved to the United States. He settled in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1854.

In December 1854, Henry went to a meeting of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He heard a speaker named Milo Andrus. Henry was very interested in the message he heard. He decided to learn more about the Church. In March 1855, Henry was baptized into the Church.

Serving as a Missionary

In October 1855, Henry Eyring was asked to serve as a missionary. He went to the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory, which is now Oklahoma. He served among the Choctaw, Creek, and Cherokee people.

Henry stayed in Indian Territory until 1860. For some of that time, he was the president of the mission there. After his mission, he moved to Ogden, in the Utah Territory.

Family Life and Church Service

Henry Eyring married Mary Bommeli in December 1860. Mary was from Switzerland and had also joined the Church. Later, in August 1872, he married Deseret Fawcett. She was born in Salt Lake City to English parents.

In 1862, Henry moved to St. George, Utah Territory. There, he became a bishop of the St. George 2nd Ward. From 1874 to 1876, Henry served another mission. This time, he went to Germany and Switzerland. During this mission, he translated an important Church book, the Doctrine and Covenants, into German.

Henry Eyring also served as the mayor of St. George for two years. He was also a main helper to Erastus Snow in the southern part of the Utah militia. From 1877 to 1887, Henry served as a counselor in the stake presidency of the St. George Stake.

In 1887, Henry Eyring moved to a Mormon settlement in Mexico called Colonia Juárez, Chihuahua. He moved because of legal issues related to his family life. He served as the president of the Church's Mexican Mission from late 1887 to the end of 1888. Later, from 1891 to 1895, he was a counselor to George Teasdale in the Mexican Mission presidency.
