Henry Gassaway Kennett (born August 29, 1835 – died January 6, 1895) was an American lawyer and politician. He was also a brave soldier who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was given the special rank of brevet brigadier general.

Who Was Henry Kennett?
Henry Gassaway Kennett was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 29, 1835. He grew up to become a lawyer, helping people with legal matters. Later in his life, he also became involved in politics.
His Role in the Civil War
When the American Civil War began, Henry Kennett joined the Union Army. He started his military career as a lieutenant colonel in the 27th Ohio regiment. This was an important leadership role.
Later, he became a colonel, leading the 79th Ohio Infantry Regiment. He guided his soldiers in battles fought in Tennessee. Colonel Kennett served bravely until he resigned from the army on August 1, 1864.
Special Military Honor
Even after he left the army, Henry Kennett was recognized for his service. On March 13, 1865, he was given the honorary rank of brevet brigadier general. A "brevet" rank is a special promotion that recognizes a soldier's bravery and good service, but it doesn't always come with higher pay or command.
After the War: A Politician
After the Civil War ended, Henry Kennett continued to serve his community. He became a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. This meant he helped make laws for the state of Ohio. He died in Cincinnati in 1895.
His Family
Henry's father was Colonel John Kennett. John Kennett was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. He went to Harvard College and owned a large tobacco company in Cincinnati. Like his son, John Kennett also served in the Civil War. He led the 4th Ohio Cavalry Regiment from 1861 to 1863.
