Henry Maksoud (born March 8, 1929 – died April 17, 2014) was a famous Brazilian businessman and engineer. He was known for starting the well-known Maksoud Plaza hotel in São Paulo, Brazil. He was also a strong supporter of ideas about freedom and individual rights.

Who Was Henry Maksoud?
Henry Maksoud was born in Brazil and had a background from Syria and Lebanon. He was married to Georgina Celia Bizerra Maksoud until he passed away at 85 years old. A year before his death, he passed on the leadership of the Maksoud Plaza hotel to his grandson, Henry Maksoud Neto. Neto had been working with him since he was 15. After Henry Maksoud died from lung cancer in 2014, his grandson officially took over the hotel.
Henry Maksoud's Education and Career
Henry Maksoud was very smart and studied a lot. He became both a Civil Engineer and an Electrical Engineer. He also earned a special degree called Master of Science in Fluid Mechanics from the University of Iowa.
He owned several important businesses. These included the Maksoud Plaza hotel, a magazine called Visão, and an engineering company named Hidroservice. From 1967 to 1968, he was the leader of the Engineering Institute of São Paulo. This shows how respected he was in the world of engineering.
Friendship with a Nobel Prize Winner
Henry Maksoud became good friends with Friedrich Hayek. Hayek was a famous economist and philosopher who won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974. Their friendship was important because Hayek visited Brazil many times to talk about ideas of freedom.
Maksoud strongly believed in economic freedom. He spoke out against the government at the time, which had strict rules and limited people's freedom. He believed that everyone should have individual freedom, that people should choose their leaders in a representative democracy, and that laws should be fair for everyone.
Henry Maksoud on TV
From 1988 into the early 1990s, Henry Maksoud had his own TV show. It was called "Henry Maksoud e Você" (Henry Maksoud and You) and was shown on TV Bandeirantes. On his show, he talked about important topics and discussed them with other well-known people.
In 1988, when Brazil was becoming more democratic, Henry Maksoud suggested a new set of laws for the country. He called it a Liberal Constitution. It was based on Friedrich Hayek's ideas. This constitution suggested that the country should have a government where laws were the most important thing, not just the decisions of a few people or political groups. This idea was called Demarchy.
Beyond Business: Theatre
Besides his work in business and engineering, Henry Maksoud also had a passion for theatre. He wrote and directed plays, like "Everlasting Emotions – A Musical Chronicle." This play was even shown at the Maksoud Plaza Theatre, which was part of his own hotel.
