Dr. Henry Samuel Boase (born September 2, 1799 – died May 5, 1883) was an important British scientist and writer in the 1800s. He was known for his work as a geologist, studying rocks and the Earth's history. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a very respected group of scientists.

Henry Boase's Early Life and Science

Henry Boase was born in Knightsbridge, London, England, on September 2, 1799. His father, also named Henry Boase, was a banker. Young Henry went to school in Tiverton and then studied chemistry in Dublin.

Later, he went to Edinburgh University and became a doctor in 1821. For a few years, he worked as a doctor in Penzance. While there, he became very interested in geology, which is the study of the Earth's rocks and how they are formed. He became a leader in local geology groups, like the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall.

Discoveries in Geology

Boase wrote a book called A Treatise on Primary Geology in 1834. This book was important because it explained a lot about old crystal and igneous rocks. It also talked about how minerals form in veins within rocks.

In 1837, he moved to London. During this time, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a big honor for scientists.

Moving to Dundee and New Work

In 1838, Henry Boase moved to Dundee, Scotland. There, he became a partner in a company that bleached fabrics. By 1846, he was the managing director. He lived at 5 Fleuchar Craig in Dundee.

Boase was a Christian who believed in creationism. In 1883, he wrote a book called A Few Words on Evolution and Creation. This book shared his ideas about how life began.

Until 1865, he worked for the Turnbull brothers at a bleach factory. Then, he started a new business with George Ireland. They bought a factory to make flax and jute products. Their company, Ireland & Boase, made things like tarpaulins and sacks.

By 1870, Henry Boase was running three different companies in Dundee. He retired in 1871 but stayed in Dundee. He passed away on May 5, 1883, at his home near the River Tay. He is buried in the Western Cemetery, Dundee.

Family Life

Henry Boase married Elizabeth Valentina Stoddard (1799–1876). They had ten children together. Some of their children included Mary Valentina Boase and Laura Bingham Boase. His son Alfred Boase (born 1829) married Henry's niece, Ellen Bradley Boase. Another son, Arthur Boase (1833–1852), was born in Dundee and went to Glenalmond College.
