Henry Warren Ogden's Early Life
Henry Warren Ogden was born on October 21, 1842, in Abingdon, Virginia. When he was about nine years old, in 1851, his family moved to Warrensburg, Missouri. There, he went to local schools.
Serving in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Henry Ogden joined the Confederate Army. This was even though Missouri, where he lived, stayed with the Union (the North). He became a lieutenant, which is a junior officer rank.
He was a first lieutenant in the Sixteenth Regiment, Missouri Infantry. Later, he worked on the staff of Brigadier General Lewis. During the war, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war for one year.
After the war ended, on June 8, 1865, he was released in Shreveport, Louisiana. He decided to stay in Louisiana and became a successful farmer, owning a large farm in Bossier Parish.
A Leader in Louisiana Politics
In 1879, Henry Ogden became a member of Louisiana's constitutional convention. This was a meeting where people wrote or changed the state's main rules and laws.
Soon after, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives from Bossier Parish. This is like being a state-level lawmaker. From 1884 to 1888, he held a very important position: the Speaker. The Speaker is the leader of the state's House of Representatives.
In the U.S. Congress
In 1894, Henry Ogden was elected to the United States House of Representatives. This happened in a special election because the previous representative, Newton C. Blanchard, had resigned. Ogden was a member of the Democratic Party.
He served in the U.S. Congress from May 12, 1894, to March 3, 1899. After his time in Congress, he returned to his farm in Louisiana. Henry Warren Ogden passed away six years later, on July 23, 1905, in Benton, which is the main town in Bossier Parish.
