Herbert Vaughn Orvis (born October 17, 1946 – died August 14, 2020) was an American football player. He was known as a strong defensive tackle. Herbert played for the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Colts. His professional career in the National Football League (NFL) lasted ten years, from 1972 to 1981. Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Colorado Buffaloes.

Herbert Orvis: A Football Star
Early Life and College Football
Herbert Orvis went to Beecher High School. Before his last year of high school, he joined the United States Army. After serving his country overseas, Orvis was able to get his high school diploma.
He then went on to play college football at the University of Colorado. Orvis was a standout player. In 1971, he was named an All-American. He also earned first-team All-Big Eight honors twice. The Big Eight was a group of college sports teams. He was even named to the All-Big Eight Decade team for the 1970s. In 1971, his team, the Colorado Buffaloes, finished as the third-best team in the country! In 2014, Orvis was honored by being added to the University of Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame.
Playing in the NFL
In 1972, Herbert Orvis was chosen in the 1972 NFL Draft. The Detroit Lions picked him as the 16th player overall in the first round. He played for the Lions for five years.
After his time with the Lions, he moved to the Baltimore Colts. He played his last four seasons with the Colts. His NFL career lasted for a total of ten years.
Life After Football
After his football career ended, Herbert Orvis explored different paths. He grew citrus fruit. He also owned an art gallery. On top of that, he ran a construction business. He retired from his work in 2013.
Hall of Fame Honors
Herbert Orvis received more big honors after his playing days. On January 8, 2015, he was chosen to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. This is a very special honor for college football players. The official ceremony took place on December 6, 2016, in New York City.
He was also inducted into the Colorado University Athletic Hall of Fame on October 30, 2014. He was named to their All-Century team. This team celebrated the first 100 years of Buffaloes’ football.
Herbert Orvis passed away on August 14, 2020, when he was 73 years old.
