Early Life and Schooling
Herbert Thompson Jr. was born in 1933 in The Bronx, a part of New York City. He grew up in other famous New York neighborhoods like Harlem and Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Before starting his religious career, he served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956. After his military service, he went to Lincoln University. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1962.
He then continued his studies at the General Theological Seminary. In 1965, he received a Master of Divinity degree. Later, in 1992, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary. He also received several special honorary degrees from different colleges and seminaries.

Herbert Thompson Jr. became a deacon and then a priest in 1965. This was for the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. His first church role was as a vicar at St Gabriel's Church in Brooklyn. He worked there until 1971.
After that, he became the rector (the main priest) of Christ Church in Bellport, New York. In 1977, he moved to Grace Church in Jamaica, Queens, where he served until 1988.
During his time as a priest, he also took on many other important roles. He helped lead meetings for the Diocese of Long Island. He was also a Canon at the Cathedral of the Incarnation.
