Hermiswil was a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the Bern region, which is like a state or canton. Hermiswil was part of the Oberaargau administrative district. On January 1, 2016, Hermiswil joined with the nearby town of Seeberg.
History of Hermiswil
Hermiswil was first mentioned in old records in the year 1289. Back then, it was called Hermanswile.
During the 1200s and 1300s, the land around Hermiswil was given by the Kyburg family to another family called vom Stein. In 1466, the city of Solothurn took over all the vom Stein family's lands, including Hermiswil.
Later, in 1665, a special agreement called the Wyniger Vertrag gave the village to Bern. Hermiswil was then managed by officials from Bollodingen and a local governor (called a Landvogt) from Wangen. People in Hermiswil who were Roman Catholic were guided by the Reformed church in Herzogenbuchsee.
Even though Hermiswil was located near two important travel routes, it stayed a small farming community. One route was a road from Bern to Aargau. The other was a railway line built in 1857, connecting Olten to Bern.
