Hermon is a small community known as a hamlet in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. It's also a census-designated place, which means it's an area defined by the government for counting people. In 2010, about 422 people lived there.

Hermon is located in the northern part of the Town of Hermon. It is southwest of Canton. From 1887 until December 31, 2016, Hermon was an official village.

History of Hermon

How Hermon Got Its Name

Hermon became an official town on April 17, 1830. It was first called Depeau, named after Francis Depeau. He owned a lot of land in the area.

The name was changed to Hermon on February 28, 1834. This was because there was another place called Depeauville in a nearby county. A post office named Hermon had already opened in the town in 1828.

Early Settlers and Life

Many of the first people to settle in Hermon came from Vermont. They were hardworking and strong. The very first white settler was James Taylor, who arrived around 1805. He cleared a small area of land.

Other early settlers like Philemon Stewart, Ariel Inman, and Rufus Hopkins came soon after. However, they left when the War of 1812 started and did not return. Thomas Tanner arrived in March 1809 and lived there for the rest of his life.

First Roads and Schools

The first road through Hermon was built just before the War of 1812. It connected Russell to De Kalb. In 1818, another road was opened, linking De Kalb to what is now Hermon village.

The first school in Hermon was held in David McCollum's house. It was taught by William D. Moore during the winter of 1817-1818.

Important First Events

The first marriage in Hermon happened on July 4, 1821. Ashbel Tryon married Harriet McCollum. The first death recorded was Peter, the baby son of Germain Sutherland, in 1818.

A post office was set up in Hermon on December 20, 1828. Benjamin Healey was the first postmaster. Mail was brought in from De Kalb by Henry Tanner on horseback.

Community Growth and People

Many families helped Hermon grow. David McCollum settled in 1812 and had four sons. Roger Story came in 1813, and Germain Sutherland settled in 1816.

Other important early settlers included William Teall (the first supervisor) and Benjamin Healey (the first town clerk). Many of these pioneers became important leaders in the community. Some of their families still live in the area today.

Early Jobs and Industries

In the beginning, people in Hermon focused on cutting down trees (lumbering). They also cleared land and grew crops for food. Over time, people realized the land was great for raising animals.

So, they started focusing more on raising livestock and dairy farming. Today, making cheese is a very important product from Hermon.

Iron Mining Efforts

Hermon has large amounts of a type of iron ore called hematite. For a long time, people thought this could make the town very rich. Mining started in a big way in 1864.

A rich investor named J. W. Lowden built a furnace to process the iron. He spent a lot of money on this project. However, around 1873-1874, there were "hard times" (a period of economic difficulty). The mining stopped and never started again. It seems it was too expensive to mine iron here compared to other places.

Village Dissolution

The Village of Hermon officially stopped being a village on December 31, 2016. It is now considered a hamlet.
