Hernando Siles Reyes (born August 5, 1882 – died November 23, 1942) was an important Bolivian politician. He served as the 31st president of Bolivia from 1926 to 1930. He also founded the Nationalist Party.
Becoming President
Hernando Siles Reyes was born in Sucre, Bolivia. He studied at the University of Saint Francis Xavier. Before becoming president, he worked in different government roles. He was even a minister in the government of President Bautista Saavedra.
In 1926, President Saavedra chose Siles to be his successor. Siles ran for president with Saavedra's brother, Abdón Saavedra, as his vice-president. They won the elections. Hernando Siles Reyes became president in August 1926.
His Time as President
Siles quickly became a very popular leader. He was known for his strong personality. He even had disagreements with the former president, Bautista Saavedra. Siles sent Saavedra and his brother (who was Siles's own Vice-President) out of the country.
However, Siles's government soon faced many problems. The world economy had a big downturn in 1929, which affected Bolivia. This caused economic difficulties for the country.
His time as president was also marked by growing tensions with neighboring Paraguay. These tensions would later lead to a major conflict called the Chaco War. To deal with his opponents, Siles sent many people who disagreed with him into exile.
Leaving Office
Things became very difficult in 1930. President Siles tried to stay in office longer than his term allowed. He said this was to help Bolivia through the economic and international problems.
However, this move angered many of his opponents. It looked like a military takeover was about to happen. So, on May 28, 1930, Siles decided to resign. He left his group of ministers in charge of the country.
Soon after, General Carlos Blanco Galindo took over the government. In 1931, new elections were held. Daniel Salamanca won these elections.
Hernando Siles Reyes spent the rest of his life living outside Bolivia. He passed away in Lima, Peru, in 1942, when he was 60 years old.
His Sons in Politics
Hernando Siles Reyes had two sons who also became presidents of Bolivia.
- His older son, Hernán Siles Zuazo, served as president from 1956 to 1960. He was president again from 1982 to 1985.
- His younger son, Luis Adolfo Siles Salinas, was acting president for a few months in 1969.
