A Look Back in Time
Hickman was started by Reverend C. H. Heckman. It officially became a city in 1885. Before 1885, the town was actually called Heckman, named after its founder.
Long ago, before 1866, this land was just open prairie. Reverend Heckman was one of the first people to settle here. He bought land near the Salt Creek.
In 1872, Reverend Heckman and Samuel Egger planned out the town. This happened after a train station was set up for the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad. This railroad connected Rulo, Nebraska to Lincoln, Nebraska.
However, when they sent the town's plan to Lancaster County, there was a mistake. The name "Heckman" was misspelled as "Hickman." So, when the city officially formed in 1885, it was named Hickman.
