History of Higginsville

Higginsville was started in 1869. It was named after Harvey Higgins, who owned the land where the city was built. A post office opened in Higginsville in 1870, helping people send and receive mail.

Confederate Memorial Site

Higginsville was once home to the Missouri Confederate Soldiers' Home. This was a place for soldiers who fought for the Confederate side during the American Civil War. After the last soldiers passed away, the land became a special cemetery.

This 135-acre site remembers the more than 40,000 people from Missouri who fought under the Confederate flag. A famous person named Captain William Clarke Quantrill is buried here.
