Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Boston's High Spine is a special architectural idea that started in 1961. It was designed by a group called the Committee of Civic Design, which was part of the Boston Society of Architects. The main goal of the High Spine was to create a line of tall buildings that stretches from Massachusetts Avenue all the way to downtown Boston. This line of buildings is located between Boylston Street on one side and Huntington Avenue and Columbus Avenue on the other. This path follows part of the Massachusetts Turnpike, which is a major highway, and also includes some old train yards. Building in this area helped avoid disturbing Boston's older, historic neighborhoods. It also gave the city a very unique skyline that helps people know where they are in the city.

Famous Buildings of the High Spine

Many of Boston's most famous tall buildings are part of the High Spine. Two of the most important ones are the John Hancock Tower and the Prudential Tower. You can find these two giants in Boston's Back Bay area, between Massachusetts Avenue and Arlington Street. Other well-known buildings that are part of this special design include 111 Huntington Avenue, 500 Boylston Street, and the Berkeley Building. All these buildings are so tall that you can easily see them from outside the city.
