History of Highgate
European settlers first arrived in the Highgate area in 1839. They measured and mapped out the land. A large piece of land, about 100 hectares (248 acres), was bought by William Ferguson. He named this land Rosefield after his wife, Rosina Ferguson.
Before 1854, another part of the land, about 40-acre (16 ha), was bought by George White. He was a tailor who owned "White's Rooms" in the city. George White and his family lived there. He created a big, beautiful garden and started a vineyard on 25 acres (10 ha) of his land. By 1875, his wine cellars could hold 54,000 imperial gallons (250,000 L) of wine. That year, they produced 5,000 imperial gallons (23,000 L) of wine.
George White passed away in 1876. His wife then sold the property. In September 1881, the land was divided into smaller blocks by F.J. Botting. He named the new area Highgate-on-the-Hill. He chose this name because he was born in a town called Highgate in England.
Over time, people started calling the area simply "Highgate." By 1900, most advertisements in newspapers used just "Highgate." By 1920, the longer name "Highgate-on-the-Hill" was no longer used at all. In 1967, the suburb was officially renamed Highgate.
