Myrtle Bank is a friendly suburb located in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It's part of the City of Unley, which is a local government area that helps manage the services and development of the community. This suburb is known for its quiet streets and green spaces.

How Myrtle Bank Got Its Name

The name "Myrtle Bank" comes from a large property that was built in the area a long time ago. In 1842, a man named William Sanders (who lived from 1801 to 1880) built a house near the foothills. He had arrived in South Australia in 1838.

William Sanders decided to name his new property "Myrtle Bank." He chose this name because his friend, James Gall of Trinity, had a beautiful property with the same name in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was a way to remember his friend and his home country.

Owners of the Original Property

Over the years, the original "Myrtle Bank" property changed hands a few times. First, it was owned by Captain William Elder, who was the brother of a famous person named Sir Thomas Elder.

Later, in 1848, the property was bought by William Ferguson (1809–1892). He made the original house even bigger and lived there with his family for many years until he passed away.

A Special Hospital During Wartime

During World War I, the "Myrtle Bank" property was used for a very important purpose. It became a repatriation hospital.

A repatriation hospital is a special hospital that helps soldiers who have returned from war. These hospitals provide medical care and support to help the soldiers recover from their injuries and illnesses. It was a place where heroes could get the care they needed after serving their country.
