History of Highspire
Highspire was started in 1814 by two German settlers, Barnes and Doughterman. They came from a small village in Bavaria called Spire. People aren't sure if the town was named after the tall church spire that could be seen from the Susquehanna River, or if it was named after their home village of Spire.
The town's location was very important. It was built along the Pennsylvania Canal system and the Susquehanna River. This made it a great spot for many different businesses. These included logging, making candy and potato chips, distilling whiskey, building boats, knitting, and milling.
The Highspire High School building is an important historical place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
