Highwood Pass is a special place in the Kananaskis Country area of Alberta, Canada. It's a mountain pass, which means it's a low point or gap between mountains that people can travel through. This pass is famous because it's the highest paved road pass in all of Canada!
Exploring Highwood Pass
Highwood Pass is located among some amazing mountains. You can find it west of Mount Rae and Mount Arethusa, which are part of the Misty Range. It's also south of another pass called Elbow Pass.
Location and Features
The pass is part of the beautiful Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. A major road, Kananaskis Trail, goes right through it. This highway is a great way to explore the area. The Highwood River actually starts right here in the pass, flowing out from this high point.
Fun Activities and Wildlife
Because Kananaskis Trail runs through Highwood Pass, it makes it easy to reach many fun places. There are lots of camping spots and areas where you can enjoy nature. People love to visit for hiking, sightseeing, and just enjoying the fresh mountain air.
To protect the amazing animals that live here, Highwood Pass is closed every year. From December until June 15, the road through the pass is shut down. This gives wildlife a safe space to move around and live without being disturbed by cars and people during important times of the year.
