The Kananaskis Improvement District is a special kind of area in Alberta, Canada. It's managed by the provincial government. This is often done for areas with a small population or a lot of wilderness.
This district is located within Alberta's Rockies, a beautiful mountain region. It shares many of its borders with a larger area called Kananaskis Country. The main office for the improvement district is in Kananaskis Village.

History of Kananaskis Improvement District
The Kananaskis Improvement District has changed its name and borders over the years. Here's how it became what it is today:
- April 1, 1945: Several smaller Improvement Districts (I.D. No. 161, I.D. No. 192, and part of I.D. No. 193) joined together. They formed a new area called I.D. No. 33.
- January 1, 1969: I.D. No. 33 combined with I.D. No. 27 to create I.D. No. 6. At the same time, nearby I.D. No. 46 and I.D. No. 50 formed I.D. No. 8.
- January 1, 1983: Parts of I.D. No. 6 and I.D. No. 8 came together. This created I.D. No. 5.
- April 1, 1996: The name of I.D. No. 5 was officially changed to the Kananaskis Improvement District.

Population of Kananaskis
Every few years, Statistics Canada counts the number of people living in different areas. This is called a census.
In the 2021 Census, 156 people lived in the Kananaskis Improvement District. They lived in 60 homes. This was a decrease from 221 people in 2016. The district covers about 4,203 square kilometers (1,623 square miles).
In the 2016 Census, 221 people lived there in 58 homes. This was also a decrease from 249 people in 2011.
Kananaskis and the G7/G8 Summit
The Kananaskis Improvement District has been chosen to host important international meetings.
- On June 26 and 27, 2002, the area hosted the 28th G8 Summit. The G8 (Group of Eight) was a group of leaders from the world's major industrial countries. They met to discuss important global issues.
- This summit took place at the Kananaskis Resort in Kananaskis Village. It was the first time a G8 Summit was held in Western Canada.
- Hosting the 2002 summit brought about $300 million into the local economy.
- Kananaskis will host the G7 meeting again in 2025. The G7 (Group of Seven) is a similar group of world leaders.
