The Kananaskis Improvement District is a special area in Alberta, Canada. It's like a large park area managed by the province. This district is found in Alberta's Rockies, a beautiful mountain region. It sits between the cities of Calgary and Banff. Much of its border is shared with Kananaskis Country, a popular outdoor recreation area. The main office for the district is in Kananaskis Village.

History of Kananaskis Improvement District

The Kananaskis Improvement District has changed its shape and name over many years. It started as different "Improvement Districts" which are special areas managed by the province.

  • 1945: Several smaller improvement districts (No. 161, No. 192, and part of No. 193) joined together. They formed a new area called Improvement District No. 33.
  • 1969: Improvement District No. 33 combined with another area, No. 27, to become Improvement District No. 6. At the same time, two nearby areas, No. 46 and No. 50, joined to form Improvement District No. 8.
  • 1983: Parts of Improvement District No. 6 and parts of Improvement District No. 8 came together. This created a new area known as Improvement District No. 5.
  • 1996: The name of Improvement District No. 5 was officially changed. It became what we know today as the Kananaskis Improvement District.

Population and Demographics

The Kananaskis Improvement District has a small population. This is because it is mostly a natural park area.

Population Counts

  • In the 2021 Census, 156 people lived in the Kananaskis Improvement District. They lived in 60 homes. This was a decrease from 221 people in 2016.
  • The district covers a large land area of about 4,203 square kilometers (1,623 square miles).
  • Because of its large size and small population, the population density is very low. This means there are very few people per square kilometer.

How Kananaskis is Governed

Unlike most towns or cities, the Kananaskis Improvement District is not run by its own elected mayor and council. Instead, it is managed by Alberta Municipal Affairs. This is a department of the provincial government of Alberta.

However, the people who live in the district do get to elect an advisory council. This council has a chairperson and three other members. Their job is to give advice and oversee the work of the government staff who manage the district.

G7 and G8 Summits in Kananaskis

The Kananaskis Improvement District has been chosen twice to host very important international meetings. These meetings are called G7 or G8 summits. The G7 (or G8, when Russia was included) is a group of leaders from the world's largest advanced economies. They meet to discuss global issues.

2002 G8 Summit

  • The 28th G8 summit happened in Kananaskis in June 2002.
  • Jean Chrétien, who was Canada's Prime Minister at the time, hosted the event.
  • It took place at the Kananaskis Resort, also known as the "Delta Lodge at Kananaskis."
  • This was only the second time Canada used a resort lodge for a G8 summit. The first was in Montebello, Quebec, in 1981.
  • The 2002 summit brought a lot of money to the Kananaskis and Alberta economies, estimated around $300 million. However, security for the event cost taxpayers over $200 million.

2025 G7 Summit

  • The 51st G7 summit was held in the Kananaskis area in June 2025.
  • Mark Carney hosted this important meeting.

These two summits are the only G7 or G8 meetings that have ever been held in Western Canada.
