Hill Top, Maryland, is a small, quiet community in Charles County. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community, meaning it's a collection of homes and buildings in a rural area.

You can find Hill Top about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west-northwest of Welcome. It is also about 2 miles (3.2 km) east-southeast of Ironsides. The community is located on Hilltop Road, which is a loop off of Maryland Route 6. It's also about 7 miles west of Port Tobacco.

This community has been around for a long time. It appeared in official records as early as 1850.

A Look Back in Time

Early Days of Hill Top

Hill Top was recognized as a community way back in 1850. At that time, the United States government counted people living there. This was part of a "census district," which is an area where the government collects information about the population.

St. Ignatius Church

A very important part of Hill Top's history is its church. Hill Top is home to a Roman Catholic parish, which is a local church community. This parish was started in 1851. The first church building for this community was named St. Ignatius Church. It was built in 1859.

Hill Top During the Civil War

The American Civil War began in 1861. During this time, a group of soldiers with artillery (large guns) from the Union army was stationed at Hill Top. This happened because Charles County, where Hill Top is located, was thought to have "Southern sympathies." This means many people in the county supported the Southern states during the war.

Nature Around Hill Top

Hill Top is located within the Nanjemoy Creek watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water, like rain and snow, drains into a common body of water. In this case, the water from Hill Top and the surrounding land flows into Nanjemoy Creek.
