Discovering Hill of Beath
Hill of Beath is a village with a rich past. It's known for its history, especially its connection to mining. It's also famous for being the home of some well-known Scottish footballers!
A Glimpse into History
Long ago, on June 16, 1670, Hill of Beath was the site of an important meeting. This gathering was for a group called the Covenanters. They were people who wanted to protect their religious beliefs. Preachers John Blackadder and John Dickson led the meeting. Many people came from far away to attend. At this time, the Covenanters faced challenges to their faith. They even brought swords and pistols to protect themselves.
The Mining Village
The village of Hill of Beath was built by the Fife Coal Company. This company owned the coal mines in the area. They rented out cottages to the miners who worked for them. In 1896, about 1,300 people lived in the village.
Mining was a dangerous job. Sadly, there were often accidents, and sometimes these were fatal. For example, in February 1901, an underground fire tragically killed seven men.
