Hinds is a small town in the Mid-Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It sits on the Canterbury Plains, right by the Hinds River. This river flows into the Pacific Ocean. You can find Hinds between the towns of Longbeach and Lowcliffe. Other nearby places include Ealing, Willowby, Windermere, Winslow, and Eiffelton.

About the Name Hinds
The town and the area around it are named after the Hinds River. The river itself was named after Reverend Samuel Hinds. He was part of the Canterbury Association. This group helped organize the settlement of Canterbury.
A Look at Hinds' History
State Highway 1 and the Main South Line railway both pass through Hinds. Passenger trains used to stop here regularly. However, the last daily passenger service ended in 2002. Now, only freight trains run through Hinds many times a day.
The town has a primary school that opened in 1881. Its first classrooms are still in use today. The school grew bigger in the 1930s. This happened when rural schools in Ealing, Maronan, and Lynnford closed. Their students then came to Hinds. There were plans to build a high school in Hinds. However, these plans never happened. The primary school gained the land that was set aside for the high school. In 2011, students from the closed rural school in Lowcliffe also joined Hinds School.

Hinds is a rural settlement. It covers about 2.18 square kilometers. In 2018, its estimated population was 340. This means there were about 156 people per square kilometer. Hinds is part of the Ealing-Lowcliffe statistical area.
At the 2018 New Zealand census, Hinds had 291 people. This was a small decrease from 2013. However, it was a slight increase since 2006. There were 114 households in the town. There were more males than females living in Hinds. About 19.6% of the people were under 15 years old.
Most people in Hinds (90.7%) were of European background. About 14.4% identified as Māori. Other groups included Pasifika and Asian people. People could choose more than one ethnicity.
When asked about religion, most people (55.7%) said they had no religion. About 30.9% were Christian. A small number followed Māori religious beliefs, Hindu, or Muslim faiths.
Education in Hinds
Hinds School is a full primary school. It teaches students from year 1 to year 8. As of February 2024. , the school has 143 students. The school first opened its doors in 1881.
