Willowby is a small community in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. It is located on the South Island, in an area called Mid-Canterbury. Willowby is found south of Ashburton, which is the main town nearby. Other small places close to Willowby include Hinds and Lynnford to the southwest. You can also find Eiffelton to the south and Huntingdon to the east.

Schools in Willowby
For many years, Willowby had its own school called Willowby School. This school taught children from their first year up to year 8. In the year 2000, three local schools joined together. They formed a new school called Longbeach School. This new school is located at the old Willowby School site. It has about 120 students and five teachers.
Willowby's Environment
Willowby is located on the Canterbury Plains. These are large, flat areas of land. The community sits between two important rivers: the Ashburton River / Hakatere and the Rangitata River. The Pacific Ocean is also not far away. Places like Eiffelton and Waterton are between Willowby and the coast.
Around the year 2000, people in Willowby started working to make their local environment better. For example, a rocky, empty area was turned into the Willowby Community Reserve. Other projects have also been done with help from the local government.
History of Religion in Willowby
Willowby used to have its own Methodist church. This church was built in 1876. It served the community for many years before closing in 1992. The beautiful stained glass windows from the Willowby church were moved. You can now see them at the Baring Square Methodist church in Ashburton. A special tapestry was also made by a church member in 1976. This tapestry celebrated 100 years of the church. It was given to the Methodist church in Tinwald.
Local Services
Willowby has its own team of volunteer firefighters. This group helps protect the community from fires, especially during hot, dry summers. They cover an area between the Ashburton River and the Hinds River. The team has 21 members. As part of the national rural fire service, they can also help other volunteer fire units nearby.
Getting Around Willowby
Willowby is not directly on the biggest roads or railway lines. However, State Highway 1 passes nearby. This is a major road that connects many parts of New Zealand. The Main South Line railway also runs close by. Both of these important transport routes go through Winslow, which is to the northwest of Willowby.
