Hines is a city in Harney County, Oregon, United States. It is located in the eastern part of Oregon. In 2020, about 1,645 people lived in Hines.

History of Hines
Hines started as a community called Herrick. It was just southwest of Burns. A man named Fred Herrick owned a lumber company and a railroad there.
In 1928, Edward Hines bought the lumber company and railroad from Herrick. A post office was opened in 1931. It was named Hines to serve the Edward Hines Lumber Company mill and the people living nearby. The lumber mill was very important to the city's growth. The mill closed in 2006.
Geography of Hines
Hines is a small city. The United States Census Bureau says the city covers about 2.13 square miles (5.52 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. About 2.08 square miles (5.39 square kilometers) is land. A very small part, about 0.05 square miles (0.13 square kilometers), is water.

Harney County does not have its own community college. However, it has a special agreement with Treasure Valley Community College. This college runs an outreach center in Burns. This helps students in Hines get college education.
