In the 1990s, the town faced some challenges. A hospital moved, and a new highway (Interstate 64) went around the town instead of through it. This caused some businesses to struggle. However, in 2007, a local business owner named Ken Allman started MountainPlex Properties. This group has been working hard to protect and bring new life to the historic downtown area.
