Hippolytushoef, often called Hippo by locals, is a charming town in the western part of the Netherlands. You can find it in the Hollands Kroon municipality, within the North Holland province. It's about 14 kilometers (9 miles) east of Den Helder.
Town's History
Hippolytushoef has a long and interesting past! It was first written about in 1343 or 1344. The name "Hippolytushoef" comes from "farmland" and Hippolytus of Rome, a famous saint.
This town was once the main village on the former island of Wieringen. Its roots go all the way back to the 12th century.
The Old Church
The Dutch Reformed church in Hippolytushoef is a very old building. It has a single main room and a tall tower with a brick top. The tower itself was built in the 13th century. The pointy top was added later, in the 15th century.
In 1674, the church was damaged, but it was quickly rebuilt the very next year. Later, in 1893, a part of the church called the choir collapsed. It was rebuilt by an architect named Joseph Cuypers in 1895.
Growth and Changes
In 1840, about 340 people lived in Hippolytushoef. For many years, until 2012, Hippolytushoef was the main town of the old municipality of Wieringen. That municipality later joined with others to form Hollands Kroon.
