Hiromi's Early Life and Music Journey
Hiromi Uehara was born in Hamamatsu, Japan, on March 26, 1979. She started learning to play the piano when she was six years old. Her piano teacher, Noriko Hikida, introduced her to jazz music when Hiromi was eight.
When she was 14, Hiromi played with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. This was a big achievement for someone so young! A few years later, at age 17, she met the famous jazz musician Chick Corea in Tokyo. He was so impressed that he invited her to play with him at his concert the very next day.
Starting a Music Career
Before becoming a full-time jazz artist, Hiromi wrote short musical pieces called jingles for Japanese companies like Nissan. After this, she went to study music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
While at Berklee, she was guided by another famous jazz musician, Ahmad Jamal. Even before she graduated, she signed a contract with a jazz record company called Telarc. Her first album, Another Mind, came out in 2003. This album was very popular in Japan, selling over 100,000 copies. It was even named Jazz Album of the Year in Japan.
After college, Hiromi kept writing, recording, and performing music. She released albums like Brain (2004) and Spiral (2006). In 2006, she started a group called Hiromi's Sonicbloom. This group included bassist Tony Grey, drummer Martin Valihora, and guitarist David Fiuczynski. They released two albums together: Time Control (2006) and Beyond Standard (2008).
In 2011, Hiromi won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. She won this award as part of the Stanley Clarke Band.
The Trio Project
Hiromi formed a group called The Trio Project. This group featured Anthony Jackson on bass and Simon Phillips on drums. Anthony Jackson had also played on Hiromi's Brain album earlier.
The Trio Project released four albums together:
- Voice (2011)
- Move (2012)
- Alive (2014)
- Spark (2016)
The albums Move and Alive both reached the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard Jazz Album charts. Their album Spark even reached the number one spot!
Instruments Hiromi Plays
Hiromi plays several different instruments during her performances. In a 2010 interview, she mentioned some of her favorite instruments. These include the Yamaha CFIII-S concert grand piano. She also uses various keyboards and synthesizers. Some of these are the Nord Lead 2, Clavia Nord Electro 2 73, Clavia Nord Stage Piano, and Korg microKORG.
