Hiromi Uehara (上原 ひろみ, Uehara Hiromi, born 26 March 1979), known simply as Hiromi, is a talented Japanese jazz musician. She is a composer and plays the piano. Hiromi is famous for her amazing piano skills and energetic live shows. She mixes different music styles like stride, post-bop, progressive rock, classical, and fusion in her songs.

Biography

Hiromi Uehara was born in Hamamatsu, Japan. She started learning piano when she was six years old. Her piano teacher, Noriko Hikida, introduced her to jazz music when she was eight.

Early Career and Education

When Hiromi was 14, she played with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. At 17, she met the famous jazz pianist Chick Corea by chance in Tokyo. He invited her to play with him at his concert the very next day!

For a few years, Hiromi wrote short songs for commercials, called "jingles," for Japanese companies like Nissan. Later, she went to study music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. There, she was guided by another jazz legend, Ahmad Jamal. Even before she finished college, she signed a contract with the jazz record company Telarc.

The Trio Project

In 2011, Hiromi formed a group called The Trio Project. She was joined by bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips. Their first album together was Voice.

The Trio Project continued to make more albums, including Move (2012), Alive (2014), and Spark (2016). Their album Spark was very successful. It reached the number one spot on the US Billboard Jazz Albums chart in April 2016.

Recent Performances

In 2021, Hiromi performed at the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Instruments

Hiromi plays several different instruments during her performances. In a 2010 interview, she mentioned some of her favorite instruments. She plays the Yamaha CFIII-S concert grand piano. She also uses various electronic keyboards and synthesizers. These include the Nord Lead 2, Clavia Nord Electro 2 73, Clavia Nord Stage Piano, and Korg microKORG.

Personal life

Hiromi Uehara married Japanese fashion designer Mihara Yasuhiro in 2007. They had met the year before when she performed at one of his fashion shows in Milan.
