Hirzel was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Horgen district of the Zürich canton in Switzerland. On January 1, 2018, Hirzel joined with the larger town of Horgen. So, it is now part of Horgen.

History of Hirzel
Hirzel is quite old! It was first written about in documents way back in 1269. At that time, its name was spelled Hirsol.
Where is Hirzel?
Hirzel covers an area of about 9.6 square kilometers (around 3.7 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 69%, is used for farming. About 18.5% of the area is covered by forests. The rest of the land has buildings, roads, or natural features like rivers.
The town of Hirzel includes a few different areas. These are Hirzel-Kirche (which means Hirzel-Church), Hirzel-Spitzen, and Hirzel-Höchi. In 1878, the borders of the town were officially measured and changed. Because of this, some farmhouses from nearby Wädenswil and Horgen became part of Hirzel.

Hirzel has a population of about 2,179 people. Most people in Hirzel speak German, which is the main language in this part of Switzerland. A smaller number of people speak English or French.
The people of Hirzel are generally well-educated. Many adults have finished high school or gone on to higher education, like university.
In 2007, the most popular political party in Hirzel was the SVP. Other popular parties included the SPS and the FDP.

Famous People from Hirzel
Hirzel is known as the birthplace of Johanna Spyri. She was born there in 1827. Johanna Spyri wrote the famous children's book Heidi. If you visit Hirzel, you can find a museum dedicated to her life and work.
Another notable person from Hirzel was Hans Landis. He was an Anabaptist leader who lived in the late 1500s.
