The Hisonotus iota is a small type of catfish. It belongs to a family of fish called Loricariidae. This fish lives in South America. You can find it in the Chapecó River. This river flows into the larger Uruguay River. The Hisonotus iota is quite tiny. It grows to about 3.3 centimeters (1.3 inches) long.

Discovering the Hisonotus iota

The Hisonotus iota was first described in 2009. Two scientists, Tiago P. Carvalho and Roberto E. Reis, found and named it. Tiago Carvalho was from the Pontifical Xavierian University. Roberto Reis was from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul.

They described this fish along with three other new Hisonotus species. These other species were also found in the Uruguay River basin. They included H. montanus, H. megaloplax, and H. leucophrys.

Where it was first found

The specific place where Hisonotus iota was first found is called its type locality. For this fish, it was the Chapecó River. This spot is near the road between Coronel Freitas and Quilombo. Both of these towns are in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.
