Hobbys Yards is a small village located in the Central West area of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Blayney Shire. This village is about an hour's drive from bigger towns like Bathurst, Blayney, and Trunkey Creek.
In 2006, about 198 people lived in the Hobbys Yards area. Most of these people lived on farms nearby. The village gets its name from Thomas Hobby, who explored the area with John Oxley, or perhaps from his son.
Hobbys Yards is about 20 kilometers (18 minutes) from Blayney by road. Blayney has the local council office, a public library, and the closest supermarket. It's also about 40 kilometers (40 minutes) from Bathurst, which has more services. The closest train station is in Newbridge, about 10 minutes away, but trains don't stop there for passengers anymore.
The roads around Hobbys Yards are sealed, but they can be icy or snowy in winter. Sometimes, they might even flood. Drivers also need to watch out for animals like kangaroos and wombats, especially after dark. The nearest places to get fuel are in Blayney.
Hobbys Yards is entirely within the Blayney Shire. However, most of the farms in the area use the same postcode as Bathurst. The local fire brigade, called Barry Hobbys Yards Rural Fire Brigade, helps keep the area safe. They have a water tank at the Hobbys Yards Community Hall.
Historic Buildings in Hobbys Yards
Hobbys Yards has two buildings that are important to its history:
- The St Peters Uniting Church (which used to be Presbyterian) at 9 Church Lane. It also has a cemetery.
- The old school building at 11 Church Lane, built in 1881. This building is now a private home.
In 2016, the St Peter's Uniting Church was damaged by a fire. The fire destroyed the communion table, baptismal font, and some chairs. The floor was also damaged. The cost to repair the church was estimated at $100,000. Luckily, the church has been repaired and now holds regular services again.
The church cemetery is no longer used for new burials. However, it has many old graves that historians find interesting. A new cemetery has been opened nearby on Cemetery Lane.
Coombing Creek
Hobbys Yards is located on Coombing Creek. The creek starts less than 3 kilometers from the village. It then flows through Barry and into Lake Rowlands. Lake Rowlands is a large dam that provides water for the town of Blayney. After the dam, Coombing Creek joins the Belubula River near Blayney.
