History of Hohentannen
Hohentannen was first mentioned in old records in 1256. Back then, it was called Hontannon. Later, in 1275, it was known as in Hohentannun. For many centuries, from the Middle Ages until 1798, the local laws and courts (called "lower courts") were managed by someone who was given permission (a "fief") by the Bishop of Constance.
Hohentannen, along with nearby Sitterdorf, Heidelberg, and Oetlishausen, all belonged to the same church area, or parish, of Bischofszell. Over time, some of these smaller places joined Hohentannen. Heidelberg and Oetlishausen became part of the municipality in 1812. Then, in 1874, a very small village called Hummelberg also joined.
Originally, Hohentannen was on an important road between Sulgen and Bischofszell. But in 1823, the road was moved to the valley, making Hohentannen a bit more peaceful and off the main path.
In the late 1800s, the main jobs in Hohentannen changed. People used to farm crops and grow grapes for wine (viticulture). But then, they started focusing more on raising cattle and producing dairy products like milk and cheese. Around 1900, many small businesses that made embroidered items also popped up in the village. Today, digging for gravel is an important way for the town to earn money.
