There's also the amazing Katandra Reserve. This reserve has many walking trails and a lake called Seymour Lake, which is great for relaxing. Many runners use Katandra Reserve for training because of its peaceful paths. The word "Katandra" comes from an Aboriginal language and means "Song of Birds."
Where is Holgate?
Holgate is located on the western side of an area known as the Matcham Estate. To the north, it borders Tumbi Umbi. To the west, you'll find Lisarow, and to the south, it's next to Erina.
Holgate's History
Holgate was once part of a very large piece of land, about 2560 acres, that was given to Charles Horatio Matcham. He was the nephew of a famous naval hero, Lord Nelson.
First Settlers
The first people to buy land in the Holgate area were Captain and Mrs. Heyne. They visited in February 1908 during their honeymoon. Later, in 1921, they moved to Holgate permanently. They were very involved in the community for a long time. Mrs. Heyne lived to be 92 years old.
Community Spirit
In the early 1920s, the people living in Holgate formed a group called a Progress Association. This group worked together to improve their area. One of their big successes was getting a telephone office opened on July 25, 1924. A year later, it also became a small post office.
How Holgate Got Its Name
When the Postmaster General needed a name for the new post office, they asked the local residents for ideas. Mrs. Pollard suggested "Holgate." This was the name of a town near York, England, where she had lived before moving to Australia. And that's how Holgate got its name!
