The Story of Holland's Pies
The company started way back in 1851. It was opened by a father and daughter, John and Sarah Whittaker, as a small sweet shop in Haslingden, Lancashire. When Sarah got married in 1869, she and her husband Richard Holland took over. They changed the name to Walter Holland and Sons.
As the business grew, they needed more space. In 1907, they moved to a bigger bakery in Baxenden. At first, they delivered their fresh pies to local customers using a horse and cart.
Growing Bigger
In 1927, Holland's started using delivery vans instead of horses. Two years later, they moved into the factory where they still are today. By 1938, they had 20 vans delivering pies all over the North West of England.
During World War II, sugar was hard to get because of rationing. This meant the company stopped making cakes and focused on making meat pies, which became very popular.
New Owners
After the war, the family decided to sell the company in 1946. It was later bought by Pork Farms in 1972, and then by Northern Foods in 1979. This made Holland's part of a much larger food company in the United Kingdom.
Today, Holland's pies and puddings are a common sight. You can find them in most chip shops across North West England.
