Exploring the Holland Neighborhood
Holland is a cool place with a mix of homes and new businesses. It's named after Josiah G. Holland, who was an American teacher, writer, and poet.
Where is Holland Located?
The Holland neighborhood has clear borders. To the north, you'll find 27th Avenue NE. Central Avenue is its eastern edge. The southern boundaries are 19th and 17th Avenues NE. Finally, University Avenue NE forms the western border.
Homes and History
Many of the houses in Holland are smaller and were built before 1920. A long time ago, in the early 1900s, many people from Eastern Europe moved here. Some of them worked at the Shoreham Yards railroad complex nearby.
Holland's Artsy Side
Today, Holland is part of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. This means you'll find lots of small businesses, yummy restaurants, art galleries, and creative workspaces. It's a great spot for artists and people who love art!
Important Places in Holland
Holland has several important landmarks that serve the community. These places make the neighborhood a great spot to live and visit.
Schools and Parks
The neighborhood is home to Edison High School, where many students learn. You can also visit Jackson Square Park for some outdoor fun. The Northeast Branch of the Hennepin County Library is also here, perfect for finding a new book.
Community Green Space
There's a special strip of land along 27th Avenue NE. It's owned by Canadian Pacific Railway but is used by the community. Volunteers from Holland help take care of it. They've even built a playground and a neighborhood garden there!
Railroad Lines
Two active railroad lines run through Holland. They belong to the Burlington Northern Railway. One line goes to downtown Minneapolis, and the other connects to Saint Paul. These tracks are built on bridges, so they go over the streets. This means cars and trains don't cross paths, which is safer!
Shopping and Dining
Central Avenue forms the eastern border of Holland. It's a busy street with many shops and places to eat. This avenue is a main commercial area for the entire Northeast community. You'll also find businesses along Lowry and University Avenues.
