Hong Wang (born in 1991) is a brilliant mathematician from China. She is famous for her work in special areas of math called Fourier analysis and geometric measure theory. Becoming a Math Whiz: Hong Wang's Early Life and Schooling
Hong Wang was born in 1991 in Guilin, a city in Guangxi, China. Her parents were both teachers. From a young age, it was clear she was very smart. She even skipped two grades in elementary school!
In 2004, she started high school at Guilin High School. When she was just 16, in 2007, she got into Peking University early. She scored very high on the "Gaokao," which is a super important college entrance exam in China. She first studied earth sciences, but after one year, she decided to switch to her true passion: mathematics.
Wang earned her first university degree, a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, from Peking University in 2011. Later, in 2014, she studied in France and received two advanced degrees: an engineering diploma from École polytechnique and a Master of Science degree from Paris-Sud University. She then moved to the United States. In 2019, she completed her highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in mathematics, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her main professor and mentor during her PhD was Larry Guth.
Hong Wang's Amazing Career in Mathematics
After finishing her PhD in 2019, Hong Wang started her professional journey. She worked as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, from 2019 to 2021. This is a famous place where brilliant minds gather to do advanced research.
From 2021 to 2023, she taught mathematics as an assistant professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 2023, Wang joined New York University (NYU) as an associate professor. She quickly advanced in her career. By September 2025, she became a full professor at NYU. At the same time, she also became a permanent professor at the Institut des hautes études scientifiques (IHES) in France. In April 2026, NYU honored her by naming her a Silver Professor of Mathematics, which is a special and important teaching position.
Hong Wang's Groundbreaking Math Discoveries
Hong Wang's research focuses on advanced math topics like harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. These fields help us understand how waves behave and how to measure complex shapes. She is especially known for her work on "Kakeya-type problems." These are tricky math puzzles that link different areas of math, such as how patterns repeat (Fourier analysis) and how shapes meet (incidence geometry).
While she was a student, Wang found new ways to tackle the "Fourier restriction problem." This problem is about understanding how to reconstruct a signal from limited information. She also helped solve the "Falconer distance problem," which deals with how far apart points can be in a set. In 2019, Wang, along with Larry Guth and Ruixiang Zhang, solved a part of the "local smoothing conjecture." Later, in 2023, Wang and Kevin Ren solved another puzzle called the "two-dimensional Furstenberg set conjecture."
One of her most famous achievements was working with Joshua Zahl on the "three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture." This is a very difficult problem in mathematics. Imagine you have a needle, and you want to turn it around completely in a small space. A Kakeya set is the smallest possible region where you can do this. In 2022, they made a big step by solving the conjecture for a specific type of Kakeya set. Then, in February 2025, they published a complete solution for the full three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture. This was a huge breakthrough! Their work showed that these Kakeya sets always have a certain "dimension" of three. This discovery is very important because it helps solve other major problems in math.

Salem Prize (2025)
