Yu Deng (born in June 1989) is a brilliant mathematician from China. He is a professor of mathematics at the University of Chicago. Professor Deng is famous for his important work in different areas of math, like understanding how things change over time (called partial differential equations), how liquids and gases move (known as fluid dynamics), and using probability to solve problems. He received the prestigious Fields Medal on July 23, 2026, which is one of the highest honors a mathematician can get!

Yu Deng's Early Life and School Days

Yu Deng was born in China in June 1989. He grew up in a city called Shenzhen in Guangdong province. His father was a software engineer (someone who designs computer programs), and his mother was a doctor who specialized in the digestive system. From a young age, Yu Deng loved math and started joining math competitions when he was in primary school.

When he was a child, Yu Deng was also very good at Go, a famous Chinese strategy board game. In 2001, during middle school, he even tried to become a professional Go player! However, he didn't make it to the national tournament. He later said that he had to choose between Go and math, and since he didn't win in Go, he decided to focus on math. This turned out to be a great choice!

While attending Shenzhen Senior High School, Yu Deng won first prize in the Chinese Mathematical Olympiad. This is a very tough math competition! Then, in 2006, when he was just 16 years old, he represented China in the International Mathematical Olympiad and won a gold medal.

Because of his amazing math skills, Yu Deng didn't have to take the difficult Gaokao exam to get into college. He was accepted into Peking University in 2007. After two years, he moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, which is a very famous science and technology school. He earned his first degree in mathematics from MIT in 2011. Later, in 2015, he earned his Ph.D. (a very advanced degree) in mathematics from Princeton University. While at Princeton, he received the Jacobus Fellowship, which is the highest award for graduate students there. His main research paper for his Ph.D. was about how certain math equations behave over a long time. His professor, Alexandru D. Ionescu, called him "a brilliant student."

Yu Deng's Amazing Career in Math

After finishing his advanced studies, Yu Deng started teaching. From 2015 to 2018, he was an instructor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. This is a well-known place for math research!

In 2018, he became an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He worked hard and became a full professor there in April 2024.

Then, in September 2024, Professor Deng moved to the University of Chicago to become an associate professor of mathematics. He quickly showed his talent and was promoted to a full professor in June 2025.

Exploring Big Math Problems

Professor Deng's research focuses on very advanced math, especially in partial differential equations (equations that describe how things change) and mathematical physics (using math to understand the physical world). He uses special math tools, like probability and combinations, to study how waves and tiny particles behave.

One of his big achievements was working with other scientists to create "random tensors." These tools help understand how waves act, especially in something called the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. He helped prove that certain properties of these waves stay the same, even when they start in a very random way. He also worked with Zaher Hani to show how a "wave kinetic equation" can be found from the Schrödinger equation, which helps us understand how waves interact over time.

Another amazing part of his work involves tiny, hard spheres, like billiard balls. Professor Deng and his team figured out how to use math to show how the Boltzmann equation (which describes how gases behave) comes from the way these tiny spheres move and bump into each other. This was a huge step because it helped explain how gases act over long periods, solving a problem that other scientists found very difficult.

Their work helped connect the movement of tiny, individual particles (like atoms or molecules) to how large amounts of fluid (like air or water) behave. This is a major breakthrough in understanding how the world works, and it's part of solving a famous math challenge called Hilbert's sixth problem.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Professor Yu Deng has received many important awards for his incredible work in mathematics.

In 2021, he was given a Sloan Research Fellowship. This award recognizes young scientists who are doing amazing research early in their careers.

In 2025, he received the Oberwolfach Prize for his "outstanding achievements in analysis and applied mathematics." This shows how much his work is valued in the math world.

Then, in 2026, he was honored with the Clay Research Award. This award celebrated his "remarkable derivation of the Boltzmann equation for long times, starting from a system of hard spheres." This means he found a brilliant way to explain how gases behave using math.

The biggest honor came on July 23, 2026, when Yu Deng was awarded the Fields Medal! This is often called the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics." He received it along with three other brilliant mathematicians: Hong Wang, John Pardon, and Jacob Tsimerman. The award ceremony happened at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Yu Deng and Hong Wang made history as the first Chinese citizens ever to win the Fields Medal.

For his work in partial differential equations, including the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from hard-sphere dynamics for rarefied gases, the derivation of wave kinetic equations from nonlinear dispersive systems, and probabilistic approaches to nonlinear Schrödinger dynamics.
