Life of Honoré I: A Young Ruler
Honoré was the youngest child of Lucien Grimaldi, who was the Lord of Monaco, and Jeanne de Pontevès-Cabanes. He became the Lord of Monaco when he was only nine months old. This happened because his father was sadly killed on August 22, 1523.
Because Honoré was so young, someone needed to rule in his place. This person was called a regent. His uncle, Augustine Grimaldi, became his first regent.
Monaco's New Alliance with Spain
Before Honoré became Lord, Monaco had been connected to France and its King, Francis I. However, Augustine Grimaldi changed this. He decided that Monaco would no longer be under France's protection.
Instead, Monaco made an alliance with Spain. This happened when the Treaties of Burgos and Tordesillas were signed in 1524. Monaco then swore its loyalty to the King of Spain, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
This meant that Spain would protect Monaco. Being a protectorate of Spain allowed Monaco to focus more on growing and less on defending itself from attacks. This alliance with Spain lasted for a long time, until 1641. It also had a big effect on Monaco's money situation.
More Regents for Honoré
Augustine Grimaldi died on April 14, 1532. Honoré was still a child, so another regent was needed. His aunt, Blanche Grimaldi, became a regent along with Nicholas Grimaldi. However, Nicholas Grimaldi was regent for only nine days. Blanche Grimaldi also had to leave Monaco soon after, on July 1, 1532.
Then, Étienne (Stephen) Grimaldi from Genoa was chosen as regent on April 23, 1532. He was known as "the Governor."
Étienne remained regent until December 16, 1540. This was when Honoré became an adult and could rule on his own. During his time as regent, Étienne helped restore the Church of St. Nicholas. Even after Honoré became an adult, Étienne continued to be the main ruler of Monaco with Honoré's permission. He stayed in this role until he died in 1561.
A Peaceful Reign
Honoré I's time as ruler was mostly calm and peaceful. People said he was brave, wise, and courageous.
During his reign, the Palace of Monaco was greatly improved and made larger. Important visitors also came to Monaco during this time. Charles V visited in 1529. Later, Pope Paul III also visited Monaco on his way to a meeting called the Council of Nice.
Family Life
In 1545, Honoré I married Isabella Grimaldi, who passed away in 1583. They had four sons together:
- Charles (born January 26, 1555 – died May 17, 1589)

- Horace (born 1558 – died 1559)
